Archive for Video Reviews

Havens winery may be no more shortly but the wine that was produced there was good. This was a great buy on sale at Wine Library for $15 especially considering you are getting a wine with 6 years age on it and you did not have to be out the money to hold on to it- This is a balanced wine worth trying.

Ok, still a few more weeks of a busy schedule so doing my best to get some of these episodes up- still have not resolved my email to comments issue yet. Been drinking some good wines lately and a few never made it to video-I opened three wines in one day and shot video of them at different points during that day- just to be able to talk about the evolution of the wine a little.

So Primitivo is nearly an identical DNA tested match to Zinfandel with Primitivo being grown in Italy. I picked up this wine expecting a medium to full bodied wine with some decent fruit but a nice spicy kick- Not exactly what I got in this wine but still a good drinking wine. This is just one of those cases when a wine is not varietal correct yet produces a really good tasting vino. Picked this up on sale for $10.50 and sells normally for around $13-$15.

Alexander Valley Vineyards is one of my favorite Sonoma producers for many reasons and the main one being that their wines are almost always in balance- rarely if ever will you have the fruit over shadowing the body and finish or the acid and tannin not be able to balance the wine. They make most of their wines in the the $15- $25 range with some as low as $8 and some as high as $60- Alexander Valley Vineyards is the winery that got me to go to Sonoma/Napa for the first time 9 years ago or so after having having their Merlot in the Key’s at a restaurant.

Alexander Valley Vineyards makes an assortment of Zins including Sin Zin also Cab. Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cyrus(a blend), a few wineclub members offering from blending sessions with actual wine club members, Sangiovese, Syrah, Pinot Noir, Gewurtz, Chardonnay, Viogner, and a host of special bottles also-

AVV is also a energy independent winery which is great. They have stuck to honest wine-making, they do not throw their wines out of balance by using huge fruit forward techniques looking to chase scores from many critics who are seduced by this, for the most part their wines are perfect to have with any meal- they enhance the experience not over take it. If you want to expand what you are drinking and want a quality winery with fair prices I would suggest joining their wine club.

Here is a link to Alexander Valley Vineyards websitewe have been wine-club members for 7 years now and been to several of their parties- a great group of people.

Year in and year out Chateau Pesquie produces some of the best wine for the dollar out of the Rhone in particular the Ventoux. I have enjoyed multiple vintages from this producer and have drank a few of these 2007′s already. as a note I do say this is one of the most complex serious wines you will find- I got interupted by the dog what I wanted to finish up with was under $15. Real wine all at a great price between $10.50 & $13.00

This is a 2007 Wyatt California Cabernet that you can find for $10-$12- not a designated region so the grapes can come from various locals in California.

Before summer is out go pick up a good Rose’ sit out back on a nice day and have a glass-If it just doesn’t make you feel good then well I don’t know what to say. The flavors are subtle and it is weird cause it makes you want more and you don’t know why-All of a sudden it will be 2 in the afternoon and WHAMO- Rose’ will pop in your head- So don’t fight it get some now!

So what is a Claret? A Claret is a fancy name to describe a wine made with Bordeaux varietals of grapes. For Example:Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Carmenere and Malbec- The name Claret originally came from England to describe the color of the wine from Bordeaux which many moons ago was a much lighter colored wine than it is today. Well as it turns out Claret is a word that other winemakers can use on their bottles of wine while the word Bordeaux can not be- Also as a side note Bordeaux is not a grape rather it is a wine made in Bordeaux and most Bordeaux wines are a blend of the various grapes listed above.

Anyway this little Claret is from Guenoc and comes from California, the winery is North of Napa. What grapes are in this wine- I have no idea the bottle and the website give no details.
