  • 2007 Mockingbird Hill Cabernet Sauvignon – USA, California, Napa Valley (8/12/2010)
very nice cabernet for under $15 – what makes this nice is that the fruit shines through – the nose is a big blueberry pie with a hint of alcohol followed by a beautiful up front fruit attack of cherry with a little pomegranite the mid range of this wine lacks depth and character and the finish rounds out with some tart cassis- what is surprising is that the finish with its in check oak actually lasts a while-going to save some and see if the mid pal rounds out later- nice wine that I would rebuy (87 pts.)

Casa Marin Winery

Casa Marin Winery, Chile
Chilean winery, Casa Marin, Pumping Out Quality and Variety
When offered the chance to review some wines from Chile, I was pretty excited. Over the years, wines from Chile have always appealed to me, thanks to their easy drinking nature and affordability. Five years ago or so, I started exploring some of the more serious producers that Chile had to offer and generally stocked my cellar with the likes of Vina Almaviva, Don Melchor, Montes offerings, along with Alpha M & Purple Angel, and Casa Lapostolle Clos Apalta. Big, red wines – single varietal or blended with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and the famous Carmenere.

I shot this video several months ago and forgot about it – so here it is. Someone mentioned in this episode is Dale Cruse who is now(sorry this was shot before it started) embarking on having a glass of Champagne every day for a year- Check out his blog DrinksAreOnMe.net and on Twitter @DaleCruse for some entertainment – Yes I know he is not as adorable and charming as I am but hey go give a look anyway!

  • 2002 Simi Shiraz Landslide – USA, California, Sonoma County, Alexander Valley (7/25/2010)
bought this at the winery several years ago – this drank well – strawberry and rasberry with a the oak fairly in check= an easy drinking wine that did not stand out in anyway or reveal any major flaws either- I do not believe they make this Shiraz and I am not sure why they use shiraz and not syrah- I am pretty sure we got this heavily discounted at the winery. • 2002 Camellia Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Lencioni Vineyard – USA, California, Sonoma County, Dry Creek Valley (7/25/2010)
nice wine – had some very nice cherry notes with a touch of leather – finish was nice and the wine was in balance- this is not a fruit bomb drinkers wine- this is restrained and easy drinking – We always like Camellia Cellars Sangio’s best of all from them but the cabs are nice too (87 pts.)

  • N.V. Ca’ Furlan Cuvée Béatrice – Italy, Veneto (7/25/2010)
Really enjoyed this prosecco – color was a light straw color and the nose had some refreshing floral notes and almost a pineapple hint on the nose- I would call the a champagne drinkers prosecco in that is very low on the sweetness scale. This wines starts to change a lot as it warms up and you almost get some of the tropical flavors you would find in a Sauvignon Blanc -nice acidity on the finish- Have had 3 bottles so far and will be getting more for $10 this is a no brainer- Oh and it has a champagne type closure so you do not need a corkscrew like other prosecco’s (89 pts.)

  • 2009 Bodegas Ateca / Zabrin Calatayud Garnacha de Fuego Old Vines – Spain, Aragón, Calatayud (7/25/2010)
Another Jorge Ordonez wine that delivers in the sub $10 range- forget sub $10 paid $6.39 for it- I mean come on that is an outright steal – this wine checks in with somenice cherry/rasberry and a hint of the alcohol comes through – there is a pleasant easy drinking nature to this wine that we really enjoyed- the brightness of the fruit was met with a little backbone and its youth is clear on the finish which can show a touch of the 14.5% alcohol. This is a go to wine when you are looking at a Dolcetto or a beaujolais heck if you are a California bright fruit pinot noir drinker and can not find something under $20 to fit you needs for a daily – give this a whirl it may do well for you (86 pts.)

  • 2006 Fattoria di Gracciano Svetoni Vino Nobile di Montepulciano TorCalvano – Italy, Tuscany, Montepulciano, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano (7/25/2010)
Dark in color nose is floral like sticking your nose in a bouquet of flowers with a touch of dark cherry, plumb- this is a fairly gripping wine, chewy, some leather-dark fruits with a bit of bright cherry -not light or soft bodied- the tanins are nice but does retain some old world feel and combines more modern winemaking while keeping a fairly nice touch of that old world feel- wine matches well with dried meats. This is a great wine to open while keeping those Brunellos and Barolos aging- and checking in around $21 I will buy more. (90 pts.)
